THIS SUNDAY 1/7
Psalm 127 is one of those short, pithy, poetic Psalms that has an uncanny way of reaching out and quickly grabbing your heart and mind. Ascribed to Solomon, “the wisest man to ever live”, it is an excellent Psalm to begin the New Year. “Unless the Lord Builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” The writer, then, intends to give some wise advice to spiritual pilgrims to take up to Jerusalem, or in our case today “to church”. Verse 1 has been quoted in its Latin form as a proverb all down the centuries: Nisi Dominus frustra, without the Lord, frustration. It is the motto of the city of Edinburgh (has any city a better?), and we find it inscribed on many a foundation stone of a church building. Frusta is Latin for frustration, anxiety, pointlessness. Has that marked your life recently? Has it interrupted your sleep? If so, this Psalm is for you. We will consider its application for all our life, including church, over the next two weeks. “What is a healthy church member?” class
This is an intergenerational, all-church event for currents members and regular attenders.
We want to be a healthy church that reproduces and is fruitful! A majority of churches in the U.S. currently are unhealthy and declining by all accounts. Spiritually and culturally we face challenges as never before that endanger spiritually unhealthy churches and their reproduction towards the next generation. This class will take a look at nine areas of spiritual health in which we can honestly diagnose our current state and then strengthen our fellowship at Island Church.

Life Groups meet throughout the week all over the South End. Life Groups are intended to be more than just an evening with friends, they are designed to foster transformational environments where people can journey and do life together wherever life happens. We encourage you to find a group that is the right fit. Whether you are new to our church or have been here for a while, we encourage you to visit one or as many groups as you would like. Once you are settled in a group, dig in and rejoice in doing life with one another, all the while making a big deal out of Christ.

"What happens when we live God's way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard- things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely". (Galatians 5:22-23 The Message)
